Another Disappointing Trip to Ulta

Do you ever notice you sometimes get treated very differently in some stores if you are not all dressed up and dolled up? As I work in Accounting and it is back room and we don’t have camera’s to Skype yet (but looks like we will when we move, which is a reason I am bulking up on makeup now.

I saw in the flyer that they had an Urban Decay eyeshadow palette on sale for $18 (so over half off regular price) but when I went to the Urban Decay section and walked around it a few times and also in other areas in the store and didn’t find it.  There was a barstool chair near the display and I had a seat, downloaded their app and looked up things on my phone.  It was still on the website, but it said the item was not coupon eligible.  I learned something new by downloaded that app so it was not a total waste of time, but  I was there at least 1o minutes and no one approached me.

As I work in Accounting and it is back room and we don’t even have camera’s to Skype yet (but looks like we may when we move in the Fall which is a reason I am bulking up on makeup.   Today I didn’t wear any makeup;  just had my braided and in a bun, and my clothing was pretty basic.   The vibes I felt from the sales gals was like “why are you here when you don’t wear makeup” – while true today I was not, but I was there to buy some paint and spackle to pretty up my package (even though I am one of those annoying people that only wants to buy things on sale and use coupons).

This took me back to when I worked in retail at a higher end clothing store and it was kind of like that too.  While we did not get a commission, we did have sales goals we needed to meet and some gals would only really try to help ladies that were already dressed nicely and make up as they assumed they would buy something.   Sometimes those ladies already had closets full of clothing and while they might want to see everything, ultimately would buy nothing as they already had stuff just like it. I just tried to help the ladies come in find what they were looking for or something that would look good on them.  One time a man and his wife came in and they were not dressed up and none of the other sales girls approached them.  I did and the husband said they lived in Ohio and didn’t shop often, but his wife needed some new clothes for work.  As I could tell this was a special outing for them I wanted to try to make their experience as enjoyable as possible and I pulled several garments that would mix and match along with some accessories and she tried them and they both seemed to enjoy on her trying on and modeling the clothing.  They ended up buying several hundred dollars that day and I felt they walked away happy customers.

I ended up leaving without buying anything and feeling depressed, but when saying prayers at dinner before and counting my blessings it seemed frivolous to be upset over something so trivial when there are real problems in the world.

  1. It may be trivial, but its still off-putting …. There is a small resort area here, with some restaurants that cater $pecifically to those vacationing. More than one time I have gone into one of those places and when I’m dressed like everyone else, my service has been spotty and “could care less” BUT the time I rolled in like a touri$t, THEN I got decent service. And thats just sad, and wrong, too, as your own retail experience helping the customer no one thought would be worth anything, proved! Besides that .. its just about being a decent soul!!!
