I stayed up watching the election results and around 2am or so was ready to go to bed when I saw the reporting on CNN.com shift from Clinton to Trump within a period of 2 minutes.  Even before the Electorial hit 270 for Trump, CNN reported that his supporters were requesting they call the election.   I went to bed and when I woke up or President Elect was Donald Trump.

It was a historic day as it is the 2nd time within 16 years.  that a Presidential candidate won by Electorial College instead of  the popular vote (Al Gore had the popular vote in 2000).  Before that, this had only happened 3 times:

  • Benjamin Harrison (electoral vote winner) vs. Grover Cleveland in 1888
  • Rutherford B. Hayes (winner) vs. Samuel J. Tilden in 1876: Tilden won the popular vote by 264,292 votes
  • John Quincy Adams won the electoral vote in 1824 but lost the popular vote to Andrew Jackson by 44,804 votes

Here is a video that explains more about the Electoral College:

Another milestone is that Donald Trump is not a politician and not served in any public office beforehand , he is a business tycoon that didn’t really need to get into politics to make his mark in the world, as he was already world-famous through his business dealings and branding the past 30+ years, along with his successful television shows “Apprentice” and “Celebrity Apprentice”.    Hillary speculated in her debates that his motivation was he as not at rich as he claimed to be, but never cited any source for that information. Hillary had been groomed for the position for over 30 years and I would have loved to see a female President in my lifetime, she has been surrounded by scandal and controversy for as far back as I can remember.   Trump has no political experience, 30+ years of experience as a leader and although he has had a few of his own scandals over the years it has been forthright in his responses even when it involved his personal life and it really wasn’t the public’s business.

Hillary had been groomed for the position for over 30 years and although I would have loved to see a female President in my lifetime, she has been surrounded by scandal and controversy for as far back as I can remember.

One thing that struck me in one of the debates was each candidate was asked to express something positive about the other; Hillary cited Donald’s children and he cited her being a fighter.  Although not a fan of either candidate,  I have to admit from watching his “Apprentice” shows that he knows smart people and has an eye for spotting potential in other people (even if he seems to despise them).  I hope he uses that talent to fill his cabinet full of smart people to advise him and to help him to become a politician as well as the leader that he already had proved that he is.  Even though he has been in bankruptcy before, he had brought his businesses back with a vengeance and I hope that he will do the same for this country.
