I heard on the radio that Half Price Books was having a “Half Pint Book Drive”, a promotion where they are collecting new and used children’s books and will match the donation and give to local organizations in need to promote childhood literacy.
I know they have been at the location on the North-East corner strip mall at Coliseum and Coldwater in Fort Wayne for many years as a former co-worker talked about going here all the time, but this was my first visit. I am pretty sure it used to be a location of Mirage Tanning back in 1998 as I was into the whole “tanning” thing that was popular, just like video rentals had been in the late ’80’s; used to be a plethora and seemed like everyone was getting on the action, but now is somewhat of a rarer find.
Half-Price Books is a family- owned National chain of that sells new and used books, along with vinyl LPs, DVD, CD and multi-media items. Their motto is “We buy and sell anything printed or recorded except yesterday’s newspaper”.
As I had pretty much donated all of my son’s old books (except the ones keeping to pass down to future grandchildren) I had to purchase some to donate. I also picked up another Little Golden Book of “Snow White” to drop off at a Little Free Library. Their prices are lower than you would pay for new books and probably around half the price you would pay retail.
The paperback picture books run from $1.99 to around $3.99 (with some being higher, although I did get the Snow White Little Golden Book for .99 cents as it was a little worn) and they do have a decent little collection of kids books in the back of the store on the right-hand side. It would be a great place to take a kid to pick out their own book to keep and encourage reading. While the library is a great resource to check out books, there is nothing like having your own book when you are a kid. Not only does reading the same words build reading comprehension, but there comfort in the repetition and knowing the outcome of the story, especially in times of turmoil in real life where as a kid, you have no control.

The only thing bad about this location if you are going east on Coliseum or South on Coldwater Road there is no way to get there, you have to drive beyond the median to the nearest left-hand turn, go into that parking area, flip around and go back.
